FILMING AND EDITING SCENES
THE 180 RULE180 rule: This rule exists as a way to ensure that the audience is able to understand the scene. Like all rules it can be broken (and there are lots of reasons to break it) but you have to understand why it is used before you can break it. It’s a rule that applies to filming and carries through to editing. The rule states that there’s a line, the line of action, that should be drawn between interacting subjects, and that cameras should only be placed on one side of the line. The reason for this rule is that if editing shots from both sides of the line it would make for a disorienting scene.
It’s primarily used as a rule to guide dialogue scenes but is just as useful in any other scene to ensure screen direction is maintained; ie. so the audience can easily understand the geography of a scene - who is where and where they are going. Remember that while we film in 3 dimensional spaces we present that back to the audience in 2 dimensions. Without rules like this things can get a bit confusing. |
THE RULE OF THIRDS & SHOT COMPOSITION
The rule of thirds is applied by aligning a subject withthe guide lines and their intersection points, placing thehorizon on the top or bottom line, or allowing linear features in the image to flow from section to section.
